Breed History

The Malshi cross breed developed in the early 90s. Although the purebred originated from different countries, Maltese from the Mediterranean, and Shih Zhu from Asia, the Malshi dog breed originated in the United States and has gained so much popularity in Australia, North-America, and some others.

This fluffy cute dog was designed to be a minimum shedding breed. The Malshi hybrid turned out to be fearless, sturdy, small with a white silky coat, people-focused and thrives on affection.

Temperament

Malshi has a loving and well-rounded temperament. They crave your love most of the time. Kids are their perfect playmates because they’re very energetic, playful and are fond of having fun. Being around elders, children, or any member of its family gives Malshi a certain degree of comfort.

They are intelligent and smart enough to pick up training. They act cool with other pets too. Malshis are practically wary of strangers, and they won’t take too long to notify their family of the presence of a visitor, and they’re quite vocal, this makes it a perfect watchdog.

Environment

Ideally, a yard is usually recommended for every dog to explore, but this isn’t necessary with this breed due to its small nature. They can live in any type of home because they’re mostly indoor pets. They are best owned by families, and it’s safe for them to be found at any corner of the house, including a small yard.

An air-conditioned room is also good for Malshi since it can sometimes suffer from respiratory problems, which could get worse in humidity and heat. Also, ensure that your yard is properly fenced before you can let them play outside.

Exercise

This breed enjoys activities and exercise, and requires about 60minutes of activities each day, consisting of short walks or jogs, jumping, running, including mental exercise, because an intelligent breed like Malshi needs it, using dog toys like a puzzle is recommended.

They could also play other games and sometimes take trips to the dog park. Malshi has a tendency of getting bored easily, which isn’t good for their overall health and well-being, that is why you need to always engage them in any indoor or outdoor activity most times.

Grooming

They require the same method of grooming with their parents because their hairs are long, silky and soft, some are wavy but shouldn’t be curly. They require daily brushing to prevent mats and tangles. Some owners clip to make grooming somewhat easier, but you still need to brush it at least weekly.

Regular bathing is necessary, they are prone to tear stains and could be treated with tear stain remover. Brush Malshis teeth at least twice a week to prevent tartar build-up, bad breath, bacteria lurk, and gum disease.

Trim their nails monthly, have a weekly ear check for bad odor and redness. Examine the paws frequently, check for sores, rashes, and inflammations to detect early signs of any health issue.
